Over the past few days, the village of Yasawa i Rara have been buzzing with creativity and innovation as approximately 40 participants proudly walked away with certificates after completing the Creative Arts Training. This initiative, led by the iTaukei Trust Fund Board (TTFB) in partnership with the Market Development Facility aimed to upskill women and young girls while adding value to traditional crafts. The training focused on diverse skills, including whole nut processing, fashion design and textiles, and intricate basket weaving, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Yasawa region.
The program also emphasized the importance of family and community support, and other male members playing a crucial role in encouraging the women and girls to participate. Designed to tap into the growing cruise tourism industry, the training empowered participants to position Yasawa i rara village as an adventure destination offering authentic cultural experiences. By enhancing the quality and marketability of their crafts, the participants are now equipped to cater to a broader audience, contributing to economic growth and sustainability in one of Fiji’s most remote locations.
The Creative Arts Training is a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and innovation. Through the combined efforts of TTFB and MDF, the initiative not only preserved cultural traditions but also created a pathway for economic empowerment. As these women and young girls step forward with newfound skills, they carry with them the promise of a brighter future for their families and communities.
